The need to predict the future, to communicate with diverse individuals some of whom might be different from oneself, and to prepare for hypothetical situations that might be different than anything one has ever experienced are all examples of the challenge that is posed by the need to self-regulate with respect to psychologically distal situations. To enable such self-regulation, people use strategies that involve abstraction of essential, distance-invariant properties of the situation. In my talk, I will demonstrate the many manifestations of abstraction and of psychological distance. I will attempt to demonstrate the usefulness of the general framework of Construal Level Theory for generating predictions and integrating findings in the area of decision making, evaluation and self-control.
