Abstract

Different health activities naturally differ in their regulatory foci (i.e., prevention vs. promotion). Thus, different methods are required in order to encourage people to join them. In three studies I showed that 1) some health behaviors (e.g., doctor visit, taking medicine) are perceived as prevention behaviors while others (e.g., immunization, healthy eating ) are perceived as promotion ones; 2) prevention behaviors are sensitive to information regarding the effectiveness of the behavior, whereas promotion behaviors are sensitive to information regarding the easiness of the behavior; 3) high-prevention individuals are motivated by messages regarding the effectiveness of the activity, whereas high-promotion individuals are motivated by messages regarding the easiness of the activity. Implications for motivating healthy activities are discussed in light of the regulatory focus theory.
